Great House - Great Book

I'm sure most of you have read The History of Love, (and if you haven't, stop what you are doing right now and read it. Seriously.) but have you read Nicole Krauss' newest book Great House? I just finished it this week and I was not disappointed. After The History of Love, I wasn't sure what to expect because nothing could top that book, but Great House definitely came close. The way she writes is so incredibly beautiful and fluid - I was totally captivated after the first few pages. It was so good that I am not even upset about the $1.40 late fee I incurred from the library for not returning it on time.

We are supposed to get more snow in Chicago this weekend, but I am determined not to let the snow get me down and to still have a productive couple of days. I might hibernate this evening but I plan on braving the cold tomorrow! My plans include:

Curling up on the couch tonight with some take-out and Paul Rudd.

Meeting with my French instructor for a lesson over coffee and petite madeleines.

Leisurely lunch and drinks with some fabulous girlfriends

What to do when your boyfriend who cooks dinner for you every night is out of town? My solution is simple...wine, cheese, bread, some fruit and a Netflix marathon of Ugly Betty.

Does anyone miss Ugly Betty as much as me? I loved the playful yet chic sets and Amanda's uber stylish wardrobe that had me drooling every episode. It's one show I could watch over and over again - it always puts a smile on my face!

Champagne Cake

YES please! I am such a champagne junky and combining it with cake just sounds like the ultimate treat to me.

I came across this amazing discovery from Apollinas who made herself a stunning Miu Miu inspired birthday cake (covered in edible glitter = awesome!!). The cake flavor? Pink Champagne! She incorporated some yummy peach preserves and vanilla buttercream. Mmmm sounds delish!

I found out she used this recipe from Simply Decorated (which originally came from Cuisine at Home) as her basis for the cake, and gave it her own twist. What a perfect treat!

Combat Boots Conflict

I'm really digging the combat boots trend lately. I love the way they can give a simple, casual outfit an edgier look. I find myself gawking at them everywhere.

As much as I want a pair for myself, I'm not sure if I would wear them enough to justify buying them. So I think a good way to ease into this would be with a more inexpensive pair to give myself a bit of a test drive. These Wild Diva Tina boots from Urbanog would be a great start! I just saw this video by Kina Grannis for the first time yesterday and I was totally awestruck. The entire video is made from jelly beans!! Apparently it took about 2 years to create, but in my opinion - it was totally worth it! Not only is the video amazing, but I love the song too! I think I might have to check out her album...enjoy!

This DIY chain and rhinestone bracelet created by I Spy DIY. I absolutely loved it and decided to take a stab at this myself.

The Supplies:

All courtesy of Michael's: a gold and a silver chain. A strand of rhinestones. Some suede string. A clasp. And some jewelry pliers.

The finished product:

My photographs don't quite do it justice, but I was very pleased with myself. The bracelet came out perfectly! I can't wait to try some other suggestions from this great DIY blog!!

I have a great red flannel shirt that I adore. It is typically reserved as my traveling outfit. Whenever I'm going a long car ride, I will throw on my flannel with a pair of jeggings for ultimate comfort. I've never looked at my flannel shirt as a cute and girly shirt. When I lived in London, one of my favorite morning rituals was to pick up the free newspaper on the way to work and read the "Missed Connections" on the train. There is something so sweet and romantic about those ads - seeking out a total stranger online after just sharing one glance. And now, thanks to Sophie Blackhall, there is an entire book of (illustrated!) missed connection messages. It looks painfully sweet and such a perfect read for the winter - curled up on the couch in a cozy sweater with some hot cocoa and dark chocolate. Yum!

I was running some errands after work last night and happened to walk by Ann Taylor. I actually stopped in my tracks because I was so taken with their new collection displayed in the windows. There was an overall theme in their new collection - a gorgeous, deep, royal blue. This rich jewel tone would look striking on just about anyone and is perfect for the upcoming cold season. I've seen so many women wearing their hair in these big, chic buns lately and for the life of me I cannot get my hair to cooperate and look like that. I never understood how even though my hair is fairly long, I couldn't get my bun to look as full as these other girls. Then I came across this "sock bun" tutorial and had one of those "ah ha!" moments. Not all of these woman have more hair than me, or are more talented than me when it comes to hair styling...some of them are cheating and putting a sock inside of their bun! Genius! I must try this immediately!

Have you read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo books yet?? I highly recommend them if you haven't. Incredibly exciting and suspenseful- I flew right through all three! (The Swedish versions of the movies are amazing too!) With the release of the American version of the first movie just around the corner, H&M has announced they are coming out with an exclusive fashion line inspired by the quirky yet cool Lisbeth Salander from the books. It definitely has her dark, edgy feel about it -I'm not sure if I'm cool enough to pull this look off, but I'm excited to check it out!

My favorite part of Halloween is the costume-watching. Each year I am always amazed at the creativity. Personally, I always feel so much pressure to think of something good for myself and it ends up being a total last minute thing. I try not to spend much money on something I'm only going to wear one night. So I'm always on the lookout for something cheap and easy to throw together. These two great options would be easy to throw together! They are cost-efficient, and each one includes at least one piece that you would actually get a lot of wear out of!

I love this Hamburgler costume from What I Wore. I think it would be so much fun to slink along the streets of Chicago in this! And it seems to be pretty simple. Just red gloves and black boots. The tie would be so easy - just glue hamburgers to a red thrift store tie. The mask you can buy anywhere this time of year, or just make out out of a scrap of black fabric! Just the hat and cape would take a bit of thought to find cheap versions - but I'm sure it can be done! (she used a cheap black bath towel for the cape!) Especially with this Forever 21 striped dress that you would absolutely wear again and again!

A few years ago, me and my red-haired friend dressed up as the 2 girls from Scooby Doo. I was Velma, and it was one of the easiest and most fun costumes ever! It is a bunch of items that you would definitely wear again, so you don't feel like you are wasting money on silly things. Just a red skirt, orange tights, black flats and and orange turtleneck. I think this one from American Apparel looks perfect! And with fake glasses being so "in" this year - you'd look more chic than geek!

Back when Ugly Betty was still on the air (Does anyone else miss that show but me?!) there were a few episodes that gave us a glimpse inside Wilhelmina's fabulous NYC home and she had a set of these gorgeous black champagne flutes. For some reason those have always stuck in my mind as something I want to own. They look so elegant but a little spooky and mysterious at the same time. I just love the opaque look of them. I've never been able to find the exact ones, but just recently I discovered that Target of all places sells something just like them! I can't believe how long I've been lusting over them and they have been at Target this whole time!

In the spirit of Halloween which is coming up this weekend, I thought I'd continue with the Halloween posts!

I know some offices are into dressing up at work for Halloween, but my office isn't one of them. I'm not sure I'd be okay with coming into work in full costume, but I would totally be okay with rocking some of these spooky Halloween shoes at work instead!

Glitter 'N Glue created these amazing and quirky googly eye shoes (inspired by the Christian Louboutin version). Wouldn't they be so much fun to wear?! I can only image the rattling sounds they make when she walks!

The supplies:

A pair of cat-eye sunglasses and some glitter glue in any color you prefer! I found using the actual glitter glue pens was much easier (and less messy) than applying the glue and the glitter separately.

These are from Charlotte Russe (only $5!!)

It was SO simple - just apply the glitter glue to the top outside corners of the sunglasses to add just a touch of glam and sparkle.

Okay, so it doesn't take a skilled DIY-er to pull this off, but I am obsessed with anything glittery and since I couldn't find a pair of glitter-accented sunglasses in my price range, I decided to make my own and thought I'd share the process with you :)

Madewell in the Midwest?!

I don't know how I didn't hear about this before, but Madewell just opened a store in Old Orchard Mall last week just outside Chicago! I'm a little jealous we didn't get one in the city first, but it sounds like plan on opening one here in 2012. I can't wait! Although I seem to buy a ton of it, I'm sort of make-up-illiterate. I think I've got the basics down, but I've only got a few moves when it comes to applying eye shadows and liners. I'm exceptionally challenged when it comes to blush. It seems like it should be so simple, but I can never seem to find the right shade that looks noticeable, yet natural. But I think I've finally found a few worth trying - they seem to be exactly what I need!

Paris Books

I love any and everything about Paris. It is by far one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been and until I can make my way back to that city, I absolutely love reading about it. There's nothing better than getting caught up in a good book that can transport my mind back there. Some of my favorite reads about Paris include:

French Lessons by Ellen Sussman - This is a steamy and romantic story about 3 young, attractive French tutors in Paris and the 3 American students they teach.

The Paris Wife by Paula McLain - this is about Earnest Hemingway's first wife and their life together in Paris. I'm actually surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, the writing really is beautiful.

Postcards from France by Megan Mcneill Libby - This is a very short, but very sweet, book written by a young girl documenting her year abroad in France. Seeing France through the eyes of a high school girl was a very different way of viewing it, but lovely just the same.

Up next on my list of Paris reads is Parisian Chic: A Style Guide , by Ines de la Fressange - This will help me in my quest to dress more French!

So I'm sure most of you have seen this video by now of the two little British girls singing "Super Base." It is seriously the cutest thing I've ever seen! That is, until they were on Ellen yesterday. They absolutely melted my heart with how adorable and not-shy they were. And when Ellen surprised them with meeting Nikki Minaj herself, they totally lost it and actually jumped on her. Just way too cute!

Craft Tacky Glue, a simple gold cuff bracelet (this one was from H&M) and an assortment of pretty craft jewels (which I found at Michael's).

I played around with several different combinations of the jewels until I found a pairing and an arrangement that I liked. Then I simply glued them on, let it dry and it was ready to flaunt!

The finished product:

In this month's issue of O Magazine I came across these delicious-looking pot pies from Flourish Baking Company in New York. You can order them online and have them shipped directly to you, ready to bake. They come if four amazing flavors - Lentil Simmer, Ratatouille, Slow-Cooked Greens and Sweet Potato Mash (I think this might be my first choice!)

I've never explored the world of ordering pre-made food online and having it mailed to me, but I think I might test it out starting with these yummy pies. They would be the perfect thing to keep in the freezer for those chilly nights when you just want to stay in and curl up on the couch with some tasty and warm comfort food. On a recent shopping trip to Ulta, they gave me a free sample of this leave-in product called It's a 10. I've been using it for the past few weeks after I wash my hair and I've noticed a definite difference! It leaves my hair so soft and shiny. Just spray it on wet hair, comb it out and ta da! So many of my friends are tying the knot this year. I've been going to all kinds of wedding showers and bachelorette parties. It's been a lot of fun and I'm always on the look-out for great gift ideas. When I first moved in with my boyfriend and we began discussing redecorating ideas, one of my first ideas was I wanted to frame the peephole on the inside of our front door just like they did on Friends. I've always wanted to do it, but was never able to in a rented apartment. Since he owns this place, it seemed like the perfect time to make it happen. Sadly, he shot the idea down rather quickly so I've been looking for new ways to spice up the entry way.

It's not in English so unfortunately, I cannot read her whole design process, but I did discover that she did this entirely out of tape!! So amazing! My boyfriend is on board with this new project, so now I'm on the hunt to find the right tape and then I think I'll try it out!

Have you ever seen the website Crap at My Parents House? It is seriously weird and hilarious at the same time. It's amazing that people sell such strange things, and even more strange there's people out there that actually buy this stuff! I was catching up with the site today and came across this one family's bathroom that made me laugh especially hard. As an Iowa Hawkeye myself, I have to say I am a bit embarrassed for them. (Okay, I'm a lot embarrassed.)

Bringing Back the Brooch

Ever since I saw Mondo wearing an adorable hot pink sea-horse brooch on Project Runway last season, I've been considering wearing a statement brooch of my own. I haven't found the perfect one for me yet, and I keep hesitating on whether or not I should even get one. But then I saw my girl Kate wearing one in Canada, and I know they are safe to wear. So I've decided to resume my search and make it happen.

I did get the ban.do mini heart pin, which I love. I feel like it's a good starter-brooch. And it doesn't hurt that it's entirely made of sequins! I love pinning this on a blazer for work. It adds just enough sparkle.

I'm also kind of digging this bike brooch from Howkapow. It has the perfect amount of whimsy to spice up an outfit.

So Lush!

My best friend and I hit up the Lush counter at Macy's the other day, because she heard they made some sort of body deodorant (seriously, this stuff was awesome!), and she wanted to check it out. It turned out to be an incredibly eye-opening experience for both of us. I've always known Lush made all kinds of gorgeous smelling (and looking!) soaps and bathbombs, but they showed us a ton of other products I'd never seen before that I just fell in love with. And the best part was, they are all totally affordable!

First of all, did you know solid lotion existed? I had never heard of such thing until we saw it at Lush. After testing it out, my arms were transformed into baby-soft skin. Not only do they have bars of lotion, they also had bronzing and shimmer bars! They look just like bars of soap, and you simply rub them on your skin to get either a bronzed look, or just a light shimmer...brilliant!

Then we found the massage bars, which are made to rub on sore muscles. The Wiccy Magic was by far my fave. It was sort of like a solid Icy Hot!

Finally, we tried the Honey Trap Lip Balm which I'm kicking myself for not buying on the spot. My lips were so soft for so long after I tried this (We also did the bubblegum sugar lip scrub....yum!).

Premiere Week - Thursday's Lineup

Thursday's are going to be out of control for me. I don't think it will be possible to cram all of these shows into one evening. Looks like I'll have plenty to watch on the DVR over the weekend!

The night begins with a killer NBC lineup starting with Community, which might be one of the funniest shows on television. It's just so silly, you can't help but love it!

Then we will finally find out once and for all, who is the new boss on The Office!

The new NBC show, Whitney begins tonight as well. I think I'll give it a shot - it looks pretty cute.

And if that wasn't enough, I've got my regular Thursday night shows - Project Runway and Jersey Shore.

And on top of alllll of that, there is a TWO hour premiere of Grey's Anatomy tonight! That is way too long if you ask me, but of course I'll DVR it and watch it Sunday night.

Mozzarella Sticks

I had no idea that it was possible to make mozzarella sticks at home without the help of a deep fryer, until I found this recipe from Taste of Home. This new-found discovery could get me into a bit of trouble! But you can't come across something like this and not try it...right?! This is on my immediate to-do list.

I didn't think there was a way to make mozzarella sticks any better than they already are, but this recipe calls for egg roll wrappers!!! Are you kidding me? The wrapping is my favorite part of egg rolls! Pop some cheese (they use string cheese!) inside one of those?! What could be better!

Premiere Week - Wednesday's Lineup

Only two shows on tonight's lineup, but they are both one hour specials, so they will keep me busy most of the evening. Tonight it is all about ABC and family shows, kicking the evening off with an hour of The Middle. I have completely fallen in love with this show. It's more real-life than a lot of other shows - they deal with every day issues and they are all a bit strange which makes it so entertaining. I think Sue Heck might be one of my favorite television characters. It might be because I see a little bit of my high school-self in her, or maybe it's her unkempt hair, or her love of pastel colored clothing, but I freaking love Sue Heck.

Ohhh Sue.

Then we end the night with the much anticipated one hour special of Modern Family. Like every other girl in America, I'm hopelessly in love with Phil Dunphy, and I am so excited to have him back in my life on Wednesday evenings. Can this show please be a full hour every week?!

And I'm going back and forth on whether or not I want to get into the X Factor. I'm sure I'll enjoy it, but I probably don't need yet another weekly television show in my routine. But if time allows this evening, maybe I'll give it a shot.

Fall has Arrived

Fall officially arrives this week and I am celebrating today with an Einstein bagel with pumpkin cream cheese. Although I absolutely dread the Chicago winters, I do enjoy the Fall. I am so excited to start wearing scarves, tights and boots. I love any and everything pumpkin flavored. And although I'll miss swimsuits and tanktops, I can't wait for big comfy sweaters and long sleeves. Happy Fall!

Premiere Week - Tuesday's Lineup

This might be my favorite week of the Fall - when all of my favorite TV shows kick off their new seasons. We've got the house stocked with food and wine, I baked a fresh batch of cookies last night, and plan to spend most of the week curled on the couch reuniting with all of my favorite characters as well as meeting some new ones.

On tonight's agenda, a round-up of some great Fox television. Starting with an hour of my favorite singing high school students on Glee.

Followed by a brand new show called The New Girl. This looks absolutely adorable and I can't wait to check it out! Who doesn't love Zoey Deschanel?!

And we will finish the evening with an new episode of Raising Hope. When this show started last season, I wasn't sure it was going to last, but I'm so happy it's back for a second season! The characters are seriously hilarious and I always find myself LOL-ing when I watch it.

And for a little dose of drama, I will also be tuning if for my guilty pleasure...90210 on the CW.

Ellen's new season started up last week and I couldn't be happier! It is so nice to have my daily dose of laughter back again. I'm telling you, the best way to end the day is to curl up in bed and watch the day's episode of Ellen.

A while back, my best friend sent me this picture she made of us with myself as Ellen and she as Portia. I have kept it on my computer ever since because it is always good for a laugh. She made through the website Face in Hole (such a clever name!) where you can put your own face on celebrities bodies. It's a bit silly, but fun!

Chicago Hot Spot: The Renegade Craft Fair

I was so close to not attending this because it is about a 45 minute trek on public transportation, but I forced myself to go and headed over to Wicker Park to check out the Renegade Craft Fair. And it was soooooo worth the trip! If I hadn't put myself on a budget before I got there, I would have left the fair totally broke. They had the most amazing things for sale from posters, to greeting cards, to jewelry to vintage goodies. It was one of the best Sunday afternoons I've spent in a while.

I did walk away with this beauty (mine is bright blue!) from Larken Design and I've already worn it twice since Sunday.

Was anyone else watching this season of Design Star?! I don't watch a ton of HGTV(of course I love House Hunters International...who doesn't?!), but for some reason I get really into this show. The finale was last night and the final 2 contestants were both from Chicago! I couldn't decide who I liked better - they both were great! - so I would have been happy with the results either way. But in the end Meg Caswell won the show! Her final room was gorgeous and I can't wait to see her new show. Congrats Meg!!

A Relaxing End to a Monday

Not a bad way to end a long Monday. A little iced coffee and some sweet petite madeleine cookies, a la Starbucks. I was a bit early to my French lesson, so I decided to relax outside for a bit with a delicious treat and a good book.

I had forgotten just how much I love madeleine cookies. Now that I've had them again, it's going to be hard to resist them. It got me thinking about whether or not they would be easy to make at home. Of course I'd first need to by a madeleine pan, because they wouldn't be as much fun to eat if they didn't have their delicate shape. I found this recipe online, and it doesn't sound too difficult. I just might have to give it a try soon.

TopShop Success

I did mange to check out the mad-house that was TopShop last night. I was only able to do a lap around the 1st floor (it's 3 stories!!) and already found a ton of glittery tops, flowy skirts, and Chicago shirts that I need to have. I can't wait until the crowds die down and I can actually shop! They have a line of clothes exclusive to the Chicago store which I just adore!

Not only was it the grand opening, but it was also Fashion's Night Out in Chicago, so there was a red carpet and big crowds with cameras awaiting the arrival of someone special. We asked around and heard that Kanye, Rihanna, Beyonce and JayZ were all coming. So obviously no one had any idea what was actually going on. So needless to say, there were no celeb spottings, only gorgeous, must-have clothes spottings. I don't know which is better!

One of my favorite feel-good movies of all time, has to be Clueless. This movie can put a smile on my face any day of the week. One of the best parts of it is all of Cher's fabulous and loud outfits (remember her amazing motorized closet?!?!) Lately I'm seeing a big trend of wearing a ton of random bracelets stacked on top of each other. I absolutely love this look, I think it's such a fun and unique look. I just recently got into the whole bracelet fad, so my collection of bracelets is pretty weak at the moment, but I plan to start stocking up so I can achieve this fabulous look!

Last week on Project Runway, Anya Ayoung-Chee stacked dozens of bright colored bangles on each arm.

These reusable zip & seal bags from Tili. They come in all different colors and patterns and would be absolutely perfect for traveling! Right now I put a lot of shampoos, lotions, etc. in ziplock bags, but these would definitely make packing more fun! You get 9 of them in one package, 3 of each pattern...So cute!

When I was in London, Marks & Spencer was one of my favorite stores. It had just about everything, from clothes, to shoes, to groceries (including the most delicious soups!)...it was really similar to Target. I was reading the Daily Mail's website this morning and found out that the new Marks & Spencer ad campaign is featuring Ryan Reynolds (adore him!) and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. A totally different look for them, and the photos are just gorgeous!

I am obsessed with this fluorescent silverware from Sania Pell! It is such a unique twist to add neon to something vintage! And it sounds so simple to re-create! She just bought a bunch of old silverware and just spray painted the handles with some hot pops of color. So easy and the results couldn't be cooler!

Breakfast Goodies

There is nothing I love more than a nice (big!) homemade meal. One thing I rarely ever cook though, is breakfast. There are so many amazingly delicious breakfast recipes out there - I feel like I'm totally missing out! Since this weekend is technically the last weekend of Summer, and it's a 3 day weekend, I think it's time to treat myself to a fancy breakfast.
